Wednesday Wish: Orange cords

bright orange corduroy jeans from Anthropologie
AG Stevie Cords, Orange: Anthropologie - £39.95 down from £128.00

Regular readers will know of my enduring attraction to all things tangerine. I have never seen bright orange cords - I guess they could be difficult to pull of sartorially - but I LOVE them!

Wednesday Wish: Orange bath towel set

Lexington Original tangerine orange coloured bath towel settangerine orange Habitat Egyptian cotton bath towel set

Lexington Original towels | Habitat Egyptian towels | Ralph Lauren Player towels

Many, many years ago in the London sales, we bought an Yves St Laurent orange bath towel set from Selfridges. They were beautiful, soft & fluffy when we got them; but now, with constant use and laundering, they’ve become a bit faded, thin & threadbare.

We’ve been looking for replacements for a while now - but the ones we’ve been seeing in the shops have all been the wrong shade of orange. You know the hue - a bit salmon or terracotta - not that knockout tangerine that we love.

Now, just like the proverbial buses, we’ve found three shops that have examples that are just right!

Is Romance Dead?

cardboard box containing my birthday present

It was my birthday on the 24th of November and when Justin asked me what I wanted, my request was met by, “Are you sure?” He thought it was a bit functional or mundane for a birthday treat.

It’s something I’ve wanted for quite a long time, and thought that it was no longer available. But, when I noticed it for sale once again on the Selfridges website, I didn’t want to miss out a second time

I blogged about it a while ago - it was one of our weekly Wednesday Wish posts - you may remember it! It’s a bright orange Dualit toaster exclusively available from Selfridges.

We’ve had a similar one that we’ve been using for years, a purple 3-slot combi that we bought at Liberty when we lived in Brighton - which was over a decade ago! We used to have lilac walls in the kitchen in that house and it looked great. It doesn’t work so well in our current home though - in fact it’s jarred on the eyes for years - a purple toaster in an orange & cream kitchen. I don’t know how we lived with it for so long!

I’m sure this Dualit will last as long as the last which was used every day and never let us down - virtually indestructible!

And romance isn’t completely dead… after our morning toast, we went for a lovely birthday lunch at the Old Bore in Rishworth.

bright orange staple free stapler
orange staple free stapler: cbs - £5.85

We’ve got a few different staplers knocking about in drawers & baskets in the house - all taking different sized staples. And have we got any staples? This bright, beautiful example puts paid to all that - it’s staple-less… staple-free!

I came across this stunning necklace on one of my daily trawls through Pinterest. I can just imaging wearing it whilst on a tropical beach holiday - strapless dress… sun tan… cocktail in hand… **sigh**

Wednesday Wish: 15 June 2011

Welcome to our new Wednesday Wish segment. Each week we’ll share something that’s recently caught our eye. We’ll start with something for the home, but could just as easily be something to wear, something to eat, a film, a book…

O is for…

Original ink & wash painting by Geoffrey Key entitled Welsh Valley

This week’s blog is a small homage to a glorious colour. O just had to be for orange.

We are big fans, and judging by our popular photos on Flickr and items that always sell well on H is for Home, so are a lot of you out there.

Orange has the wonderful ability to look warm & cosy in the winter or lively & fresh in the summer.

Orange objects really catch the eye. It enables them to shout loudly in a collection of other brightly coloured pieces.

Alternatively, it’s perfect as a highlight colour within a muted decor or against natural materials.

We’ve given a few chairs the orange treatment!

We did a G is for Garden a couple of months ago having just planted out some annuals. Our French marigolds are doing well in the sunshine & showers.

Till next week! x

K is for…

Image of our kitchen

Probably our favourite room in the house. We love spending time in here - cooking, chatting or having a big mug of tea after a long dog walk.

We have the main wall painted a zingy tangerine. It’s bright & lively in the summer but also gives a warm cosy feel when the nights draw in. We used to have it painted a fresh apple green but this felt a bit cold in the winter, so we had to get the brushes back out.

The orange also works well with the stainless steel and various shades within the stone tiled splash-back.

The centre of the room is filled with a large, old, beech baker’s table which serves as our main seating & eating area - also a very useful extra work surface.

On the opposite wall to the work units & cooker is a stone fireplace. This would once have housed the original kitchen range.

The chimney has not gone to waste however, with the cast iron stove chuffing away on chilly nights. On the ceiling above this stove we have a slatted drying rack - perfect for hanging washing on cold, rainy days. The graphic 1960’s street scene is by artist Ken Law… and on the stone ledge sit various vintage pottery plates including Poole and Royal Copenhagen. Mixing old & new is a recurring theme throughout our house.

We like the blend of rustic pieces such as the baker’s table, butcher’s block and spoon rack with the modern stainless steel and downlighting.

Photo of our kitchen workbench

Both being former chefs, we like to fill the kitchen with practical (and preferably good looking) equipment.

Objects from the 1950s, 60s & 70s seem to fit in well, helping to tie it all together.

Vintage kitchen enamel and ceramics are a particular passion of ours - pots, pans, storage jars etc. Hornsea, Denby, Cathrineholm, Rorstrand, Figgjo Flint, Arabia, Dansk Designs, Le Creuset are just a few of the names we look for…

and then there are the cookbooks … don’t get us started on those!
